View Full Version : Advanced Roleplay Guidelines

This section is for Roleplays that go above and beyond the rest. This section stresses the importance of plot and character development and literacy.
People who participate in these threads should have a good command of the language, spelling, and grammar.
Signatures should be limited in size so as not to detract from the thread.
Roleplays that are 'random' in plot do not belong here.
All other forum rules that apply to the rest of dollwizard apply here as well.

why do i have the feeling this place will be kinda empty?
I love the idea, though. I hope I'll find good rps in the future.

The new sub section has only been up for a brief time. I'm sure we'll find a couple RPs in here soon.
This will be the place for quality over quantity. :)

I just made an RP in this section...hopefully it does well. It was an idea I was working on for a while, but I finally decided to make an RP out of it.

Hmmm...I'm...iffy on this whole thing. Undoubtedly, it will make it easier for me to pick and choose literate RPs...but it feels a bit judgemental, no? It's scary...like trying out for something. I mean, a) it's a bit competitive, and "not cutting it" (for me at least) would sting like the dickens, and b) well. Nevermind. It's a bit unbased, I suppose.
Anyway. So far so good, I guess. I'm keepin' my fingers crossed!

I don't think its judgemental at all. Either your a good writer or your not...its nothing personal. I think this gives the seriouse writers a good place to be able to use their ability. I think its a great idea for the really great writers.

YES!!! Finally another site I can go to for decent roleplays!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! (this is of course providing that everything works out as planned.)
A couple of moderators and I will make sure this place is kept neat, and follows the guidelines.

Well, I think it is a little judgemental, in the most basic sense of the word. I mean, who "judges" whether you're a "good" writer, or not? Good is a very subjective word. But I don't want to turn this into a debate, so I'll just say good luck and be on my way.
Not really. I plan to post here....eventually.

The whole point of this is judgmental and I like it that way. If you let in every single person who thinks they can write a sentence then your roleplays go to heck. It's better to select those who enter so that you have a better chance of getting neater rp which is easy to read.
And to answer your question: the GM of the rp decides whether you're good enough to enter their rp or not.

Oh, no doubt. I totally agree with you. And, to be honest, I kinda like it, too, because abundant incompetence (since we're going to be blunt) irritates me.
But it shouldn't.
Anyway. Thanks, But that was rhetorical.

You know, my view on the whole thing is this: There are people who are very descriptive, literite and monogamous about their RP writing (hint hint: me!). It chaps my hide when I start to RP with someone who doesn't capatilize, doesn't puntuate and doesn't use quotations. It's hard to READ! Like this for ex:
hestodd at heer sideand saidthis, i don''t like thisonebit.
I HATE THAT.
7000 I agree with you on the other hand. It is competitive, but the only reason that is, is because the best writers are trying to get spots on the best RPs.
I think everyone knows where I'm coming from.:)
angelgirl1419
04-15-2007, 07:06 PM
We can't look at is as a competition though-unless of coarse a Role Play has limited spots-which most of the time they do not. It all depends on the makers preference of coarse.
And for that do use that kind of writing in the Rp's that LillyPadDooDa gave an example of, they wouldn't go to an Advanced role play section, for they know that they don't like to get that detailed, they just want to role play. Which, really dosn't bother me all the horribly. But now, for the others that are really very interested in starting a decent roleplay, and get really involved in their plot line and charactes, well then the Advanced is the perfect place. A person dosn't have to be this marvelouse writer to fit into a good Role Play. Good word usage, and proper spelling and punctuation can go along way without writing well.

Hmm, I really like this idea.
What I really hate is when someone netspeaks, or when they don't use quotation marks, capitalization, etc. It may seem harsh, but I feel like biting someone's head off when that happens.
Even when I put the rules about grammar in my thread, there's usually someone who messes up anyways. I'm trying to be harsher and more severe about it, but, for me, that's kind of hard.
And spelling... Don't get me started. I really hate it when someone mispells(sp?) a perfectly easy word... Of course, I do it too... But I'm trying to get in the habit of putting (sp?) by it, especially when I'm not really really sure about how it's spelled.
Punctuation really irks me, and, well, with quotation marks... Unless it's a really stupid mistake, I let it slide... I'm not all that good at it, either...
Yeah, if this is just... a really stupid thing that I shouldn't have put in, I'm sorry... Seriously, I'm sorry...

My opinion of this is competition is good, it provides incentive to improve your writing. If this subforum stays as lax as the rest of the roleplaying areas her then it will stagnate. However if we strive to get better then we'll end up with much better writing that is more enjoyable to read.
My opinion of literary ineptness is typos are fine, a misplaced comma, ok. However if you consistently mispell, misuse punctuation, and abuse grammar then get the heck out of my rp.

Well, if that's true, then the less...um........we'll say "literate" for now...The less literate among us will never really have the chance to better themselves. Because we just won't let them in. I say we as if I belong here, which, as of now, I suppose I technically don't.
Though there is an RP in the making.

If they're unwilling to put the effort to at least attempt correct spelling and grammar then they don't belong. We can always help them along if they express uncertainty or such but if they won't work at it why should we put up w/ it?

Mm. Well, reading these last few posts (and the way you shot down that girl in your thread--not judging, just observing), I think what I lack is the ability to crush people to their faces. Instead, I come here, to places like this, with people who I hold in higher esteem, and discuss how the irk me. And that's wrong, and I know it's wrong, and that's what makes me feel bad.
But, as I've restated several times, not bad enough to stray. I like it here. I deserve to be shot. In the face. With a spoon. A very sharp spoon.

Oh, I don't remember. But she came back with, "Jeez, I'm only 11," or something...and I winced for her.
By the way, I like the look of it so far. Is there any plot, or is it pretty non-linear? I'm good with either--I just don't want to join in the middle of anything.
A smart person would post this on the actual thread...

Maybe but I'll answer it here: I'm not really in charge of it now, I don't even know where it is. Originally it was going to have a plot but they moved on in my absence and now I guess it's all up to Hikari, Akito, and Durwen.

Hey, honestly no offense, but you seem to be a little conservative about stuff. Or is the word I'm looking for "up-tight". Now again no offense but you kicked an 11 year old off your RPG because he or she was apparently too young for this section. I'm 13 and I have a really good and well-planned RPG on here. Just cool it a little dude.
Wolfgang Hype
04-17-2007, 04:57 AM
No, I kicked an 11 year old out of my rp because she hadn't yet learned how to use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling, why can't you people comprehend that? I don't care how old you are as long as you meet the requirements, she couldn't so she wasn't accepted. The best analogy I can think of for this circumstance at the moment is this: in amusement parks they don't care how old you are, just that you meet the height requirements, same basic principle just people usually gain height at a steady rate where as you have to work at literacy.
And yes I'm uptight about this. I'm used to a place where I don't have to worry about illiterate people most of the time, so excuse me for not showing sympathy when someone doesn't measure up.
Tracia
04-17-2007, 03:23 PM
This place is becoming a complaint site. Advance Roleplay guidelines has been set and now is up to the author of the ARP to decide which people to accept and which not to. Every ARP is going to be checked anyway to make sure they meet the requierements to be in the Advanced section, if they don't, they'll be moved.
Do not argue upon the results of the guidelines and author's decisions. Age is irrelevant when it comes to proper speaking and writing, and it will be under the author's consideration rather to accept or decline a request for joining.

It's just I am not that far from 11 years old, I'm 13, so it just somewhat offended me. So...

04-17-2007, 08:41 PM
But as Tracia said above...age is irrelevant. It wasn't about her age that made it so she could not participate in Wolfgang Hype's Role Play, it was that she didn't follow the requirements made. Which included proper spelling, grammer, and so forth. Heck, as long as they were literate and used punctuation, and eight year old could participate in an Rp. Who would know the difference? It wasn't judging based on her age at all, and be it only two years or not, eleven to thirteen is quite a large step on the maturity level, as far as I am concerenced.

Well no one should really argue with Wolfy on the issue, it was his call, not yours. I remember that too, it was because of her illiteracy... And Angel, you shouldn't take offence from other peoples issues, I know from personal experience of RPing with Wolfy and in the Fantasy RP Thread that he is a competent and well situated RPer and RP maker, so his call on that girl was legitimate... I myself get cranky with illiteracy on my threads(even on others threads), as well as people going out of character *grumbles something about an inccident that happened yesterday*...
I have confidence in Wolfy, now I am farely new on Dollwizard, I originally signed up a year ago but I didn't touch my account and start posting till late January 07, might have even been in february... I've got alot of RP experience on private RP sites, Gaia and My Patronus. I know when people have simply made typos from typing to fast, or when they just can't spell... But Wolfy's got even a better eye then me, which makes me think he should be a mod at times. If you people don't stop attacking his call on that little girl then I'm going to have to start hunting down your posts and start picking at them and see how you feel! He's only human and humans make mistakes, although I don't consider it a mistake!
Btw... "Hi Wolfy!" waves at him smiling brightly....
Also I have noticed a few RPs that are iffy to be in here, atleast by my opinion on what an Advanced Roleplay is and should be... but that's just my opinion, however I must say there are a few really good RPs in this section...

Thanks Durwen, but I always feel if I can't justify my actions then I was most likely wrong in them, so I don't mind the criticism (except when it gets out of hand).
Twilight, I wasn't saying it wasn't for 11 year olds, or at least I didn't mean to say that. What I was trying to convey was that I wouldn't accept age as an excuse. If she wasn't capable of cleaning up her writing then she would be unable to join. Like you don't hand someone a sniper rifle and make the excuse that they haven't had much training when they miss their target on an important mission. (What is with me an analogies? =P)

True, but I'm more agressive... that's what I get for having mainly guy friends, and the girls that are my friends, well in my opinion sometimes I think they should be guys! lol... What kind of girl, wrestles, plays street hockey, builds forts, goes hunting, watches every play off game she can manage, prefers beer over any other alcoholic drink and likes to make stunt movies??? Oh! speaking of stunt movies, me and the boys are starting our next one soon! I'm going to ride a bike off our school roof, either that or I was thinking the whole sheet parachute thing... I know, it sounds stupid, but Im highly durable... heh, despite the last three: my sister for one (Broken inside, not Hikari). But the rest sounds interesting, I'm not nearly so... reckless I guess fits. I'm more sit at home w/ a book/video game/writing kind of guy.

why scream? you need remarks carefully calculated to sting as much as possible.
Lol, nice way of putting it.

Ive been hit by three cars, went over a cliff on a skidoo and got the crap beat out of me by a boy and not once have i had a broken bone, concusion or had to go to the hospital for anything!!!
What kind of girl?.. crazy ones.
I'm very durable too, but the diference between you and me is that I don't try to kill myself, but death keeps on pursuing me.. dunno why.
It would be intresting to watch you anyway. YOutube yourself!! XD

^_^ It will... we have a picture of me eating slime out of a drain pipe... man that was gross.... but I got a plate of dynamite rolls, a bowl of chicken donburi, a miso soup and some saki out of the deal <3 lol... I couldn't eat it all... so the miso and half my donburi are sitting in my fridge ^_^

Slime? Lol, you need a strong stomach for that...
But more importantly...was the Sake good? lol

I'm thinking I might try my hand at making another rp... what would appeal most to of you that frequent here? I'm open to just about anything though I would prefer it not be cliche.

Good! ^_^ Happy to hear it, I've been waiting for a good role play latley, but no one seems to make many anymore.
I'm good for all aspects, i'm not too picky.

Durwen
05-15-2007, 06:32 AM
None right now... I am considering on making an rp based on the story I'm writing... but that will come in a ll do time, also I am in the process of developing an rp to post that is highly-literate with zero tolerence for out of character acts(such as having a super nice charry being cruel) and so on, and so on... When it is ready I will be sure to psot here so you can know ^_^ My peter pan RP could be redone and spruced up for full out literacy ^_^ *ponders* How I love Peter Pan!!!
angelgirl1419
05-16-2007, 08:40 PM
I love Peter Pan too, Lol! Yes, and do make those rp's. I desperately need a good, literate, rp, its been so long since i've joined any, and I've currently hit a writters block on what I should make my next rp on...
Durwen
05-22-2007, 09:51 PM
Well when my Peter Pan one is up to snuff so that it can be put in the advanced RP I will be sure to let you know ^.^ God I love Peter Pan! 'All children grow up... except for one'

ARG!! I can't find anything to join! My rp is getting plagued by god-mods. And the only other two I looked at weren't literate (I consider a literate rp post to be over 3 sentences, both were run by the same person and had single sentence posts).
Yeah. Not much creativeness here...

I think I finally have an idea for a decent roleplay: A fantasy style rp based in a world that's centered around aerial travel/combat/interaction. Flight will be a common feature for animals and most people will have a means by which to move aerially (if that makes sense). I haven't come up w/ a conflict yet but what do you guys think so far?
angelgirl1419
05-23-2007, 08:48 PM
Sounds pretty good. And by aerial, you mean air travel, or something like that, right? You should do it. I would join.^_^

05-23-2007, 10:41 PM
well I'm planning on it, I'm just making some decisions first. What I'm currently picking from is: Races, Setting (plain fantasy, post sci-fi fantasy, possibly a mix...), and Community structure (political structure, town/city/village set-ups, general population, ect.)
As an early disclaimer, I'm going to be putting alot of work into it so I'm going to expect a lot from my rpers.
Sounds really interesting, I think I want to join. [:
I hope your character sheet makes me think!

That's good to know. Little update: I've got two races planned: Children, who are something like winged hobbits, and possibly humans. I know humans won't be native to the planet but I'm not sure how they got there. I've got a general idea for the Community Structure and plot is coming along.
So if everything goes as planned I should have sign-ups ready to go after the holiday weekend... no promises though.
That's fine, take your time. I'd rather it take forever and have a good RP, than take a little bit of time and have a bad made RP.

I'm probably going to take my time, just if things continue as they are I can get an rp out soon.
On another note: What's up with Death's_Soul? He/she has at least 6 rps in this section of the forum. Out Cast Returns; Circus of the Damned; The Twin River; The Zodiac's Curse; The Prophesy; and The Hunted. IMO that is way too many for someone to have and maintain a good level of quality. For example he/she frequently has only one sentence posts. I'm not really asking for action to be taken against him/her just... bringing it to everyone's attention.
Tracia
05-26-2007, 01:45 AM
You're right, I noticed this too. If that continues... can I move him to regular RP section? XP
Wolfgang Hype

Does anyone know how many characters/words go into the little summary that pops up if you leave your cursor over a topic? Cause I was thinking it might be nice if people put an actual summary there so you wouldn't have to go into topics and look around. (Of course I'm saying this to save others from my (possibly overly) harsh tongue. =P
That would be a good idea Wolf, perhaps you should post that in the Suggestion section.
And yes Tracia, I think it would be alright to move, if she keeps on posting multiple threads, with no effort in plot, or character profiles.

Kweee!!! I started up my Peter Pan RP finally... before I just sort of killed it off being massively picky when it was in the regular RP section... it's good... the only thing that's short handed is the profile sheet, but since like 90% of the charry's will be canons I couldn't make anythign too fancy *sweat drop* I'm thinking of whipping up an originals sheet... but I don't want originals till later on... hrm... well back to work byeeez!!!

I was bored, so I reread some of this.
I completely failed at my initial sub-goal.

Hey, a thought? It occurred to me today that some people want to become RPG experts, but just need a little guidance.
On another site I go to, they do what they call "Adopt A Newbie," where people volunteer to take new or just raw RPers as like an apprentice. I was wondering if anyone else here thinks that might have some value...
Wolfgang Hype
06-02-2007, 02:50 PM
Sounds fine to me. I did something like it on an old site I was on, though what I did was try to "adopt" all the newbies at once by making a dueling tournament... didn't work too well. =P

So... Should we start a thread about it, just base it out of this topic... or just PM random people asking about it?
Tracia
06-03-2007, 09:31 PM
I dunno. I can support the idea, but I can't tutor anybody. I... dunno how? XD
You want to make a thread? I think it's a good idea.
Ravenheart
06-03-2007, 10:33 PM
Yeah, it deserves a thread. Get a list of people willing to adopt, post it with the topic, then people can sign up for adoption.
Also, have people include things like what kind of RPs they like. If you're a High Fantasy person, it'd irritate the heck out of you to have to train somebody who just wants a lightsaber and a space ship, you know?
Wolfgang Hype
06-03-2007, 10:37 PM
Alright... Well I can handle it unless someone else has a burning desire to, I guess it'll mostly be just organization and I have the time for it (usually). So if you want to Adopt PM me, I'll post a topic later today after I get some responses (or I'll pass the info on if someone decideds they want to take over).

What exactly would "we" be teaching them? And are the prerequisites for the "we?" I guess that would come up if "we" started a thread? If so, I would be interest in joining this "we." Just tell me what to do.
Wolfgang Hype
06-04-2007, 01:25 AM
I think another word would have worked much better than saying "we" constantly.
But basically it would be giving tips and pointers in how to improve your adopted student's writing as well as instructions in basic Rp etiquette. Prequisites would be that you yourself be a good writer and rper. Needed information would probably just be what your prefered genre of rp is (fantasy, horror, sci-fi, ect) and anything else you want to include. Just PM me the information and I'll add you to the list of teachers for when I make the topic.
7000dominos
06-04-2007, 01:28 AM
I'm going to ignore that.
And right, I'd figured as much (about the "good writer/rper" bit). But who decides that? Do I have to pass a test? I can spell "experience" without looking it up. According to MySpace, that counts for something.
Wolfgang Hype
06-04-2007, 01:34 AM
Myspace is a poor standard IMO, but that's just because it seems the current hub of internet activity. I'm not going to judge anyone, except if I know from experience that some one's not quite committed to literate RPing or if someone else has a problem with them beinga judge.
And if you're going to ignore something, never state it. If you do you're still acknowledging it.

What really bugs me is when someone doesn't even write it like it's supposed to be. Ex:
*snort* dork! *gigglesnort*
It's really annoying. Also, I've noticed a lot of people don't read the rules. I'm trying to be more strict about it. If they don't follow the rules, I'm kicking them out.
I'm not seeing a lot of this here. I will be trying to clean this place up.
If anyone feels that a certain RP doesn't not belong here feel free to message me with the name of the RP and a link to it.
I believe I will be adding a stickied thread on what I want to see here shortly.
Thank you.
