Does anyone else here get the backlash of giving out critiques on other people's stories? I have, once or twice...well...not really...but it's coming...I don't see why people always have to get offensive about it; I do and I don't. For one, it's criticism and generally it's not going to sound pretty.

Suppose that be the best thing...
I wouldn't mind some critism on my story, if you don't mind. . .

People always think I'm being really mean. It's probably my diction and the fact that I don't tell them they're really great and stick smilies everywhere possible. I wish that more people would actually appreciate constructive criticism. And that people would pass some my way instead of just ignoring everything I post.

Nope, I sure don't. Flaming, I hate. CC it's totally cool with me.

People who stick smilies everywhere either think (1) their story is really great, (2) know nothing about proper writing tools, or (3) are afraid to tell the truth. People say Simon Cowell is mean but he tells the truth. He doesn't butter them up to make them feel better... he tells them the hard truth. It hurts because it IS the truth, truth always hurts. Criticism is generally not nice. Cause then it wouldn't really be criticism, but polite-I don't know-opinions. I try to never get offended if someone critiques my story, whether it be in a harsh way or nice way.

I would much rather have someone reply to something I wrote telling me it was crap than have someone say, "Wow! That was so good! :)". And if you are going to say that, at least tell me why it was so wonderful. Granted, I'd also prefer someone tell me why it was crap, not just that it was. I just think that returning the favour and taking the time to read and dissect what people have written seems like a pretty logical step. Evidently not to a lot of people. I mean, I know that it can kind of hurt a little when someone is telling you how to improve a story that you've worked really hard on and are really proud of, but if they took the time to read the story and are willing to try and help you, you should at least not insult them or get angry with them.

I usually always look at what people say before speaking. It's something I taught myself to do. Even when it comes to critiquing my stories I'm just not usually offended by criticism. That might sound like buggery, but really I'm not. Flaming, is just criticism with no ethics and idiots ranting their heads off. I prefer it in a more dignified, harsh way. I just hate it when people say they love my story without giving a reason. My stories are terrible and if you say you like them you must have mental issues. But I guess that's why I don't like critiquing stories too. I give my stories crap effort and then I'm telling someone else what to do with there's. I...wait...why am I saying all this...?

Haha I don't know, you've been given a soapbox and no one's telling you to step down. Why am I always slipping in snide remarks about how no one reads my stories? Anyway, I don't have a problem with telling people how stories could be better written, as I've read many brilliant stories and can make mental notes. Now, whether I follow any of my own advice is certainly up for debate, but I'd like to think I do to the best of my ability. Aspiring writers need to learn not to be upset by criticism, especially the constructive kind. Not every person on the planet is going to enjoy your work, so you'll just have to come to terms with that and try to learn what you can from the criticism. (Note here that I am using the universal you, I'm not saying you personally.)

Cool. Thanks.
It's got a really easy title:

i don't like it much when people get mad when you give them gentle critisism. BUT BUT BUT i also think that being completely and totally blunt and rude about it is not the way to go. If YOU don't want to get yelled at, then be nice or at least curtuous about it. I have no idea how to spell that. But still.
