View Full Version : Are There Any People On This Forum Against Labels Like Me?

You'd think more than one person on here would be against labeling people. Labeling is like racism. It pisses me off that people segregate people by what they wear and what music they listen to. And then they go around, " I <3 Blacks, I <3 Gays" when they don't hang out with the cheerleader that used to be their best friend in 3rd grade because she doesn't want to wear black lipstick like you. It's pathetic. You probably think, " GET A LIFE," but you're the one spending all day on this forum trying to make friends with pedophiles! I hate people nagging at me to be a label. And then when I'm not all "goth" or "geek"...uh-oh, INSTANT PREP. Truly pathetic.

I rather like labels. Labels are, in fact, crucial to the way we live our lives. If humans did not label nothing would make sense. We wouldn't be able to communicate, we wouldn't be able to define things. Are you human? Well, 'human' is a label! Labels help us!

Before you go all "STFU N00B" on me, I know you mean stereotypes and teenage subculture labels. These, too, can be good. It is not like racism at all. Racism is the discrimination of one due to their race. Labels are merely, well, labels.

Some people really like labels. For some, being called 'nerd' or 'punk' or 'prep' makes them feel that they fit in. For some, labels are a place to fit in. I mean, if one is considered a 'goth' they fit into a group. They have a place in society. Some people like it.

Of course, there is discrimination due to labels and stereotypes, which is bad. All forms of discrimination are bad as far as I'm concerned. But that isn't the labels, it's the discrimination. The labels within themselves are not harmful.

There's the point; labels are not harmful, and some people like them, so why be so against them? Labels can be nice and useful, and the stereotypes can be fun to joke about, as long as you keep it a joke.

i understand what ur saying, not the commenter but the person who wrote this. but that last comenter has a point. we cant help it if we get called a label, im just a tomboy really and i used to call ppl who wore pink girly and dumb but then i met someone who acted like that and they turned out to be one of my best friends. but whether u go with the label thing or not u gotta relizr that u will see various groups of ppl who all dress alike or do the same things. props if u are not like tht but im known for being im my own i sorta have some best freidns from other groups.:D

well I think that stereotypes are just a part of growing up and being a teenager, because without them there would be people who felt like they didn't fit in. There are so many different labels/stereotypes now that everyone fits into at least one of them. Does anyone agree?

Probably I'm gussing around the time you get to college. Most people tend to mature a little bit during high school after 10th grade, But I think you start to be fully mature when you get your carreer...I dont think your employer wants you to dress 'scene/emo/goth' to work. :/ I don't know it also depends on the person.

Yeah I get what you mean. Well I don't know anything about grades because I'm in England, but I'm in my last year at school, I'm 15 and no-one I know seems to have grown out of stereotypes yet. So I guess I should change the way I dress if I want to get a job, lol.

Eh California right now is boring as well. Everyone is getting ready to go back to school. Right now it's cloudy, so not many surfers out in the beach..It was raining but it stopped. Typical Californian day. :D

I think it's alright when you label yourself. Because, that can't be a hard judgement can it? No body knows you better than you, so if you call yourself an emo, goth, prep, whatever i'm fine with that.

It just annoys me when people automatically judge you and they haven't even met you. People call me emo, or sometimes even goth bcause of the way i dress sometimes. (It's called being original...) Anyone who properly knows me will know i'm too girly to be emo, and too emo to be girly. They call me gemo. (girly-emo... my own label... lol.)

and, i don't really see the point in labels, everyone is different, no matter what label you are.

Yeah, you can label yourself but there is enough labels out there now for everyone to fit into on, and you've made up your own which shows even more individuality, good on you.

a steriotypical emo, (where i live, this might be different in other places) is listening to rock music, ie, MCR, Greenday + Fall Out boy, b/c emo i short for emotional rocker. also emo is about the style, like just standing out, and being original. Like wearing a tutu.

But i know in some place, emo is about being depressed all the time, and listening to depressing music, and cutting yourself... ??

Yeah an emo is the same where I live as where you live but everyone seems to think it is the second one. Well I like Rock music, I wear original clothes and love to stand out, but I also fit into the second one so I guess I am emo. Thanks for your help x

Labels have their place, like most things. Humans are social creatures. Labels can give a sense of place, belonging etc. Also, some labels can help guess what a person would like. If somebody were a Goth, for example, they'd likely prefer dark things.

But when you get somebody beaten up for being a Goth, then Labels have left their place, and become something destructive. Labels have a good and bad side, like most things.
