Thunder shook the dark city as a great storm moved across the region. In between the flashes of lightning, two shadows moved on the cobble stone road. They slipped down a dark alley way. The smaller of the two stopped at the end of the alley and felt the wall. When it found what it was looking for and took out a small key and in between two of the bricks placed the key. As it disappeared so did the bricks reveling a door. When it was open the two shadows walked in and closed door behind them.
“This storm came out of nowhere, eh, Ghost?” spoke the larger of the two shadows.
“You’re right it did,” replied Ghost, “Will this hamper your plans, Demon?”
“No, since I am the Thief King after all.” said Demon.
“Only you would say that.” laughed Ghost her green eyes flashing.
“I heard that Prince Ethane is back.” said Demon as he looked at Ghost.
“I know but I don’t want to see him. If you think I will just run back into his arms you are very wrong, Great Thief King” replied Ghost angrily as she walked past him.
“That’s good to know. I don’t want my best thief to have her mind clouded by our enemy.” said Demon following Ghost.
The rest of their walk was in silence. When they reached the opening to a side hallway Ghost stopped. She looked at Demon and regarded the Thief King for a while. Demon kept on walking down the hall to where his room was. It had been fifteen years since she came to Casidonia and ten years for Demon and her to become the most famous and wanted thieves in the city. She watched Demon disappear into the darkness of the hallway. When he was out of sight, Ghost entered the other hallway toward her room. At her door, Ghost thought about her life as a thief. How she had come from nothing to being the most famous thief. True it had been a long and hard road but it was fun. When she closed the door to her room, she let out a long sigh that seemed to echo around the room. She could not help but sob a little from her emotions that were welled up in side her but she could not have these emotions. For a thief with emotions was the first in jail in this town. Ghost couldn’t help but notice how small her room was but it was better than the streets. She climbed onto the bed and drifted off into an uneasy sleep.
The next afternoon Ghost found Demon in the library. He looked different from yesterday. His grey eyes were cold as he looked at a document that was on the small table in the middle of the room.
“We need to start today. If not, my plans will be ruined, Ghost. The whole palace will be on guard and it will be hard to get in. If only Ethane had stayed a little longer.” said Demon not looking up from the document.
“Do you wish for me to tell him what is going on?” asked Ghost.
“No! We cannot let anyone who is not a thief to know of our agreement with the prince.”
“Even so, he does have a right to know since we are partners in all of this.” said Ghost as she walked toward the opposite side of the table.
“The assassins are moving. According to this report they will be here in a day.”
“Then we have no choice but to tell him.”
“Fine. Go, but hurry back I don’t want you trapped there for too long.”
“Right” said Ghost as she disappeared into the darkness that surrounded both of them.
Ghost raced across the rooftops toward the palace as the sun began to set. She knew the easiest ways to get there, the faster Prince Ethane knew the better. She stopped when she realized that the sun was still out and there was a good bit of light left. On time for a great thief such as her to be out. There would be no way that she could get into the palace with out being seen. She looked around the courtyard and saw a perfect place for her to enter the palace and then she could exit off the balcony that was near Ethane’s room. As she slipped past the guards Ghost could not help but notice the all the new guards. Why were they here? She had seen all the trainees but none of these guards looked that young and that green. Something was wrong.
Ghost moved down the passageways with great ease. The darkness was her element. It did not take her long to find Ethane’s room. She gave the door two soft knocks before it opened to reveal a man with shoulder length wheat-colored hair with some of it covering his light blue eyes. Ghost let out a relived sigh when she saw him.
“Ethane, Demon sent me to tell you that you’re in danger of an assassination attempt.” stated Ghost as she entered his room.
“I could guess. Since the guards outside are not our normal guards.” replied Ethane.
“That’s what I thought.”
Out of the corner of her eye Ghost saw three dark shadows by the door to the balcony. Ethane already had his sword half way unsheathed. Then Demon appeared out of the shadows of Ethane’s room. His grey eyes held a dark fire in them that seemed fathomless.
“Demon, what are you doing here?” asked Ghost shocked still amazed that he could do that better than her.
“I just got word of this. So I came as quickly as possible, I’m glad I was not to late.” replied brandishing a sword from under his cloak.
“Well the more the merrier.” said Ethane as more of the assassins appeared at the door.
They were completely surrounded by assassins. Ghost knew that these were the best in the land. For they had the black rose, the symbol of the assassins guild in the next town.
“You should never underestimate the power of the thieves of Casidonia! For we are the greatest!” laughed Demon as the first assassin lunged forward.
“Ha! We are Assassins of the Black Rose, thief. We are far more powerful that you.” said the assassin.
“Then know who you are dealing with, fool. For I am Demon the Thief King!”cried Demon as he killed the assassin in a single stroke.
“Demon! You must be careful on who you give you name to. Our enemies could find out things about us that we do not need them to know.” cried Ghost as she cut down two assassins with her sword.
“She is right you know. You should not say such things unless you have a death wish.” said Ethane as he strained against a very strong looking assassin.
When it was all the assassins were dead, Demon disappeared as he usually did after a battle. When Ghost had confronted him about it Demon said he always thought over his battles. Ghost looked at Ethane as he sheathed his sword, he was bloody and looked haggard. It had been only a few months since she had last seen him but in that small time he seemed to have changed a lot. It did not take Ghost long to notice the silence that hung over the room.
“It has been a long time since we last fought side by side. ” said Ethane as he broke the silence.
“Yeah, it has.”replied Ghost
“Even so this may be the last day we see each other or the next or the next. Ghost, what I’m trying to say is I love you and I know that we can never be together but at least let us be friends.”
“Ethane, as long as you and Demon have that contract we will keep seeing each other. That was part of the deal that you and he made. All the thieves under Demon’s rule must obey. He is the Thief King and the only king we answer to. Besides we can never be together because I am a thief. That is my world, the only thing I know, my life. I would not trade it for anything else. So our love is a forbidden love and having love in the world of thieves is dangerous, you as a prince should know that.” whispered Ghost as she walked toward the now dark balcony.
“But why now. Is it because I am the crown prince and you are the second most famous thief in Casidonia and that we should be enemies not allies?” asked Ethane as he watched her.
“Yes. And if that time does come then we need to break all ties so that we do not hurt your reputation. Since I am a thief, I, nor, Demon can trust anyone even our own friends. In the end we will just end up hurting each other. It is better this way.” said Ghost as she walked into the darkness.
“I guess you are right Ghost.” said Ethane he stopped short when he realized that Ghost had vanished off the balcony into the night.
Ethane walked out to the balcony and looked at the stars just as he had done for many years. It would be a mater of time before he saw Ghost, Demon and the other thieves that he had yet to meet. He wondered what the future held for the Great Thieves of Casidonia. He would always wonder even when he was king.
Ghost remained in the shadows under the balcony and watched Ethane for a while. It was only when Demon reappeared did she take her attention off Ethane.
“I’m glad you got over that. Will you be alright?” asked Demon as he, too, looked at the stars.
“Who knows. Only time will tell. It was your wish after all.” replied Ghost as she turned to leave.
“Hey! I never said do that to him!” cried Demon as he followed her.
“Whatever, Great Thief King.” laughed Ghost.
The two thieves faded into the darkness that was them and would always be them. For the darkness was the thieves of Casidonia. It was Casidonia. Demon, Ghost and Ethane knew that all to well.
“This storm came out of nowhere, eh, Ghost?” spoke the larger of the two shadows.
