I just heard this a few minutes ago, and a part of my heart was crushed. Paramore (who I had heard of but never listened to before until now) did a cover of U2's classic "Sunday Bloody Sunday". I love the original song, partly because of its raw rage, its unrestrained passion and intensity. (And partly because the subject matter is important to me.) But, that's what I love about 80s U2: how much they pulsed with unbridled emotion. After hearing about this cover, I found it on YouTube and was very sad. They made it slow and the vocals hardly can compare with Bono's furious accusations and cries. The song lost its meaning somewhere in the translation. Without the fierce emotion of the original, she (whoever Paramore's singer is) might as well be singing about what a nice day she had.

Apologies for the mini-rant. I just love that song and I'm sad that justice wasn't done.
**Note: This is not an attack on Paramore, so please don't reply to this thread with "OMG! I LUV PARAMORE, UR DUM IF YOU DONT!" I am merely voicing my opinion on this particular cover. Outside this song, I have no opinion on Paramore.

Paramore's version is okay, I'm not exactly calling it crap...I'm just saying that as far as keeping the real meaning of the song, it fails miserably. And because it was a song so driven by emotion, I really dislike it. (And, no, I'm not one of those people who gets really pissed because the cover doesn't sound exactly like the original. I like when people put their own spin on songs.)

I don't think the Paramore version is all that great. On that YouTube page, people are like: "Oh my god! I like this one bettah!"
It just seems too... lalala yeah... stuff happened in 1972... lalala... It's whimsical and slow and sad and a little angsty.
The U2 version has such pure and raw anger and emotion in comparison. I suppose you are right, dancer, about maybe Bono cares more about the situation he's singing about. The cover falls too short for me.
Off topic: Where is Paramore from? Are anyof them Irish? Did anyone care about the comflict in Ireland? Mostly I am just wondering why they choose to do a cover of that song. Was it because it's an angry song? We may never know...

For some reason, my first reaction was: all we are is dust in the wind... But in regards to that question, I have no idea. I can only hope that maybe one of the numerous Paramore fans on here could school us on that.
