Even if you can't afford them...list them.
Alexander McQueen: There's nothing more to be said about this man other than what his clothes have already said--and that's how fashion is supposed to be, in my opinion, a form of self expression that is apart and autonomous from words. My favorite collections are Spring 07 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/S2007RTW/review/AMCQUEEN) and Spring 08 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/S2008RTW/review/AMCQUEEN)
Vivienne Westwood: From the Sex Pistols to Nana, she has retained her individuality and I find her rebellious designs to stay true to her original punk rock aesthetic despite being so popular now. Fall 2008 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/F2008RTW/complete/thumb/VWRED)
Y & Kei: Not especially popular but extremely chic and polished, I have admired this Korean duo's aesthetic for a long time. I might not be into Buddhism and nature like they are, especially since I find their clothes a lot more cosmopolitan than their supposedly tree-hugging roots, but I still appreciate the outcome which is consistently wearable, well-made clothing. Fall 08 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/F2008RTW/complete/thumb/YKEI), Spring 07 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/S2007RTW/complete/thumb/YKEI)
Rag & Bone: Just great and polished in general. Fall 08 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/collections/F2008RTW/complete/thumb/RBONE)
Free People: I like this brand a lot because all of their clothes are really organic, soft, and have a home-made feel to them. They're frequently a mix of materials which make them really sort of quirky. For example: http://www.freepeople.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/products.detail/productID/0fbd956c-bb2a-44f8-89ac-d3a609b396a8/categoryID/3c77b415-a309-4742-bc3c-011f2c33ab60 , http://www.freepeople.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/products.detail/productID/3f5e7fb6-865f-4518-9d45-3f21d2d0c0fa/categoryID/200ea380-cc77-4d25-8844-132069878c76
Urban Outfitters: I admit I love this store so much, especially for their shoes and dresses.
