In the shock of seeing her mother dying right in front of her, Kyoki ran into the forest where she lived off the land for a year. She was then taken in by a kind human woman Kyoki came to see as an older sister. After a few happy months of living with her Nee-san (older sister), two drunks from the town who wished to have the 'cat-monster' killed showed up and tried to get Kyoki from her Nee-san. Her Nee-san refused to let them take Kyoki away and the two men raped the woman and left. Kyoki (who had been hiding underneath the floor boards and heard everything) came out to check on her Nee-san. The woman requested a knife and Kyoki brought it to her, unaware of what her Nee-san intended to do with it. Her Nee-san stabbed herself and told Kyoki to forget her life there and died. Kyoki then tried to drown herself in a nearby river and failed. She became a wanderer for a few years and terrorized villages into giving her food.
