Ok, for people that need help.
You go to your "Account" (it's on the top, second navigator bar, on top of the advertisement.)
After you are there, there should be a Control Panel that has many options.
You want to go under, "Settings & Options"

(I'm not comepletely sure what you mean by characters, but I'm going to guess you mean signatures)
If you want to edit/add a signature:
Go to the option that says, "Edit Signature"
After you click there a CSS box should appear ("edit signature"), if you are advanced or know a bit about the vB code, here it should be easy, but if you don't, use the box under that where it says "Signature Picture," if you have the URL of the picture you want to use you copy and paste it there, if you have the picture saved in your computer you click, "Browse" and look for the picture you want. When you are satisfied you click "Save Signature" (Character limit)
Here is something useful to make it look fancy: vB code (http://forums.dollwizard.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode)

If you want to add an avatar:
Go to the option that says, "Edit Avatar"
After that, there should be two options that you can use...
Option 1, you can copy and paste the URL into this box.
Option 2, you can upload from your computer "Browse"
When you are satisfied you click "Save Changes"
(Remember though there is a size limit)

Hope this is useful, remember though, keep the size of your signatures to a limit, it really annoys and confuzes people when they are TOO big.
