Well I'd like to start off with the same way you learn Japanese kind of.You know? The whole..."it is" and such.

the verb "to be"? That's a little hard, cos it's split in two, but let's see..
In spanish, the verb "to be" is splitted in two. Verb "ser", which implies existance and verb "estar", which implies position.
PRONOUNS FIRST:
I - yo
You - tu
He - el
She - ella
It - eso/esa
We - nosotros
You - ustedes
They - ellos/ellas
IN spanish, gender is important. You must learn to make difference of gender, cos words have gender. In pronouns, we separate males from females and that will affect the way you build the whole phrase, but don't get scared. It's not that hard if you pay attention.
Verbs are not much affected by this, but it's important anyway.
Most of the time, masculine words are ended in O, U or a consonant.
Female words are usually ended in A, I.
Vocal E is very neutral, so you will hve to pay attention to how it's used.
We'll be making remarks of the gender during aaaaalllll this thread. I know how confusing it can get.

Okay yeah.Like if you said "eres muy bonita" it would directed to a girl.

CONJUGATION OF SER
I'll be using pronouns in spanish, so check the post above about it.
Yo - soy
Tu - eres
El - es
Ella - es
Eso - es
Nosotros/nosotras - somos
UStedes - son
Ellos/ellas - son
Check how I made a point by marking the gender in We and They. The verb is not affected, but the words accompaning the verb will be.
I marked ESO because there are several words for this one and you have to be careful:
Eso - is used for non-living things and the most used for expressions as 'What's that?" ¿Qué es eso?
Esa - is used for both living and non-living things. For non living things is aplicated just as ESO but in referal of a femenine word or object. For living things, is used mainly for poiting out people: "Esa persona" (that person). It also has a despective meaning when talking about a female. "Thell that woman to shut up" (Dile a esa que se calle). Females can find it aggresive and even offensive, so be careful.
Ese - is used just like esa, but this has a male connotation.
This verb implies existance. It responds to the question: What is it?
Yo soy buen estudiante.
(I'm a good student)
Ellos son amigos
(They're friends)
CONJUGACION DE ESTAR
Yo estoy
Tu estas
El está
Ella está
Eso está
Nosotros estamos
Ustedes están
Ellos están
This verb implies existance and position. It responds to the questions What are they doing? Where are they?
Yo estoy comiendo
(I'm eating)
Ella está cocinando
(she's cooking)

Okay yeah.Like if you said "eres muy bonita" it would directed to a girl.
Yes. Usually, bonita is only used for females all ages. For males, the usage is limitated during their childhood. Later on, it's no good you call them "bonito".
Of course you can use this adjective for objects.
Es una casa bonita.
(It's a pretty house)
Ese es un auto bonito.
(That's a pretty car)

Tracia

I'll start with colours cos I find it simply. Then we'll see other adjectives.
Red - rojo
blue - azul
green - verde
yellow - amarillo
pink - rosa
black - negro
white - blanco
orange - naranja
light blue - celeste
purple - morado, púrpura
lilac - lila
brown - café
violet - violeta
turquoise - turquesa
aquamarine - acuamarina
golden - dorado
silver - plateado
bronze - bronce
The adjectives, unlike spanish, go usually after the subject. There are ocations when they're placed before, but that's a more poetic kind of speaking and can usually be found only in literature. ALso, not just about any adjective can be placed before the subject, cos It might change the whole meaning. Let's just keep the
subject + adjective structure.
In spanish we also use particles before the subject itself that defines the gender of it.
THE has an equivalent of:
El
La
Los
Las
El and La being single. Los Las being multiple
EL/LOS being male
LA/LAS being female
La casa blanca
The white house
Los patitos amarillos
The yellow duckies
El sol dorado
The golden sun
Las calles negras
The black streets

Gender is something difficult for many english speakers and some other languages, and it can get a bit confusing, but it's not that much. You just need to pay a little attention.
Today I'll put up some descriptive adjectives used mainly for people. Remember, they go after the subject; and they're written as:
MALE/FEMALE - MEANING
bonito/bonita - pretty
feo/fea - ugly
alto/alta - tall
bajo/baja - short
pesado/pesada - heavy
ligero/ligera - light weighted
callado/callada - quiet
pasivo/pasiva - steady
cuidadoso/ cuidadosa - careful
gordo/gorda - fat
flaco/flaca - skinny
delicado/delicada - delicate
seguro de sí mismo / segura de sí misma - self secure
orgulloso/orgullosa - proud
relajado/relajada - laid back
nervioso/nerviosa - tense
enojado/enojada - upset, mad.
loco/loca - crazy, insane
with these, the verbs Ser and _Estar are quite exchangable, but sometimes can have a bit of a different meaning. Nevertheless, when using them, they'll probably smile, but will understand.
Ella es bonita
She is pretty
The verb Ser denotes affirmation here. While using Estar:
ella está bonita
would require the affirmation of a third, but the response could be both possitive and negative, cos it opens the door to personal opinion.
A: Ella está bonita
B: Si, mucho. (yes, very)
A: Ella está bonita
B: ¡Para nada! (Not at all!)

Tracia,
I've been reading your lessons, and I watched as Baby intruded and gave you that lame test, obviously you know what you're doing... go you for proving her wrong! Also that test was obviously done by someone who isn't that great at spanish since I know nothing in the subject and I knew some of those answers... but if Baby is really good at spanish like she seems to claim(which I'm betting she is not and that she is using some retarded automatic translator) she should easily be able to translate what you just wrote!
Anyways I'm done saying my bit,

So "Cómo" is like saying...."how?"
Tracia
04-20-2007, 05:13 PM
Yes.
How - Cómo (with accent or otherwise you'll be saying "I eat")
When - Cuándo
WHy - por qué
where - dónde
When you ask "por qué", you write it separate, but when answering, you must write it together and without the stress, "porque", which is an equivalent of "because".

Another thing.Could you explain the verbs "to be" a little more.I thought I understood,but I guess I didn't><
Tracia
04-21-2007, 08:15 PM
Um.. okay. The topic is a little extense, anyway, and it requieres to pay attention and to practice. It would helped if you tell me what is your specific doubt, but I'll give you this in the meantime.
The usage of "ser" when we think it should be "estar".
When is this?
Previously, i indicated that "estar" is used for position, but there are, as always, exceptions to the rule.
In a phrase like the next one we'll see this:
"The party will be at Angie's house"
We might think the translation would be something like "la fiesta estará en casa de Angie", because we imagine that Angie's house is a position, a location. Nevertheless, we are wrong. When you are to say where something is going to happen, you use "ser", not "estar", which would leave us with this phrase: La fiesta será en casa de Angie.
*Will be is the equivalent of será
Let's see more examples.
"They gave me this adress. Can you tell me where it is?"
Me dieron esta dirección. ¿Puede decirme dónde es?
"It depends of where it is from. If it's from Colombia, they'll send..."
Depende de dónde sea. Si es de Colombia, le enviarán...
I think it is used "ser" when the question to answer is "where will it be, where was it from, how's it gonna be".
Será en mi casa.
será en la escuela.
será al aire libre
era de Texas
And "estar" when you want to answer "where is it now, where was it before, where is it going, how was it. how is it,"
Está bajo un arbol
Estuvo en Cancún
Estarán en el cine
Estuvo bien.
Está lloviendo.

I've tried and tried to get this....but I'm sooooo confused!
Could you tell me how the normal sentence order of a sentence in Spanish should be put together?(I think that would help a bit more)
Tracia
05-20-2007, 11:12 PM
Alright. Let's see...
The common sentence is built as follows:
Article/preposition + subject + verb+ object
There are simplier structures just as:
subject+verb+object
subject+verb
but usually, they're not very usefull. It's very common in elementary school and as introductory course for student's, and it helps understand. But you have to pay a lot of attention to structures of certain phrases.
Let's start simple, with descriptive sentences. Let's remember the adjective always goes before the object when it comes to description.
La casa es azul.
La - particle/preposition
casa - house. Subject/object
es- to be. Verb
azul - adjetive.
Q. Why is the adjetive in the end?
That is another basic structure.
particle/preposition + subject + verb + adjetive + object
It responds to the question "What color is the house?". You cannot say: La casa es azul casa. It's a meaningless sentence. Therefore, you eliminate the repetitive object and say only the adjective, cos you made clear you are talking about the house.
La casa es grande. (big)
LA casa es pequeña (small)
La casa es nueva (new)
La casa es vieja (old)
Nevertheless, this kind of sentence has little use in real life spanish. Let's see a short description. I'll put it as simple as can be.
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u34/HRHJacqui/P3183902.jpg
Esta casa es pequeña y azul. El techo y las paredes son azules. También la cerca es azul. Tiene un toro pintado al frente y una palmera con el número 221 a un lado, pero es toda azul.
This house is small and blue. The roof and the walls are blue. The fence is also blue. IT has a bull painted on the front wall and a palm tree with the number 221 on the side, but it is all blue.
techo - roof
cerca - fence
tambien - also, too
toro - bull
pintado - painted
palma - palm tree
lado - side
Perhaps I should start with little excersices to explain and make it more clear...

ninja_panda
09-23-2009, 06:40 PM
Yes please..
Tracia
09-23-2009, 06:51 PM
Ok. Let's see.
first of all, I have to remind you the adjective goes after the object in spanish, and that
you do not need to repeat the object everytime. You could also use the posts above as
a reference, but a descriptive paragraph can be like this>
Mi perro es cafe. Tiene el pelo largo y lacio.Sus ojos son negros y
grandes y la nariz oscura.
@
Mi dog is brown. It has the hair long and straigh. It's eyes are blac and big and the
nose dark.
Now, we take the adjectives>
cafe - brown
largo - long
lacio - straight
black - negro
grandes - big
oscura - dark
Descriptive adjectives are quite wide, and we can start with the simple ones>
BASIC COLORS>
Negro - black
Blanco - white
Azul - blue
Verde _ green
Rojo - red
Amarillo - yellow
Gris - grey
Naranja - orange
Cafe - brown
SIZES>
chico/pequeno - small
grande - big
mediano - medium
amplio - wide
angosto - stretch
TEXTURES>
suave - soft
rugoso - harsh
duro - hard
there are many more, but we can make a pause here.
